SOUND TRACES embeds a cultural auditorium and listening space into the abandoned conglomerate quarry of the Mönchsberg in Salzburg - a green retreat held within the city’s core.
The project treats architecture as a record of vibration: its volumes are derived from Chladni nodal patterns, the standing waves that sound leaves behind in matter. Stone won from the site returns as rammed walls and cast lime-and-clay modules, closing the loop between excavation and construction.
Water threads through the building as both structure and experience, slowly weathering its porous surfaces. Suspended from the rock and tuned to listen, the architecture registers the erosion of its own material — a space where sound, stone, and water leave their traces in one another.
